Satellite Telecom-munication Services In the last two decades telecommunication services have undergone a profound change mainly linked to: the development of new global networks (wireless, optical fibers, internet..), the possibility to access new frequencies (especially true for mobile communication), the adoption, by the industry, of new international standards (DVB-Sx, DVB-Tx, DVB-H, DVB-SH..), the implementation of more powerful algorithms for the encoding of signal compression.

And, in line with these significant developments, telecom-munication satellites have maintained the role of a valid resource for global broadband and bidrectional services. The reasons of the success can be easily ascribed to an ubiquitous coverage, a rapid roll-out of the solution, reasonable upfront investments.

Major applications in telecom-munication via satellite can be observed in the following areas:

  • Broadband services;
  • Telephony;
  • Backbone connectivity both for Internet or GSM applications;
  • ADSL connectivity in rural areas;
  • Mobile communications;
  • Machine-to-machine communications.

Most of the commercial applications make use of geostationary satellites but things are evolving in this respect and new innovative approaches to telecom-munication services can be observed with the use of low, and sometime very low, orbit "repeaters".
